Who holds the air over your county?

Coverage maps are marketing. Licences are public record. carrierdepth reads the FCC's licence database every week and shows which frequencies Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Dish and SpaceX hold in every US county, and what that depth means for the service you can actually get.

How to read it

Depth is not one number.

A carrier with 200 MHz is not twice as good as a carrier with 100. It depends where on the dial that spectrum sits. Low frequencies carry for miles and reach indoors. High frequencies carry enormous amounts of data a short distance. Every county page splits each carrier's holdings into four layers so you can see reach and capacity separately.

In Wake County, Verizon holds the most low-band (71.68 MHz) while T-Mobile holds the most below 6 GHz overall (378 MHz). Those are different strengths.

mmWave

24 GHz and up

4550 MHz

Enormous channels that reach a few city blocks. Useful in stadiums and downtown cores, irrelevant across most of a county.

High-band

2.3 – 6 GHz

596 MHz

WCS, 2.5 GHz, 3.45 GHz, CBRS and C-band: wide channels, shorter range. This is where fast, dense 5G comes from.

Mid-band

1 – 2.2 GHz

345 MHz

PCS and AWS. The long-serving capacity layer that carries most everyday LTE and a growing share of 5G.

Low-band

below 1 GHz

199.68 MHz

Travels miles and passes through walls. It is the coverage layer: the reason a phone works in a basement or far from town.

Independent, and deliberately boring about it.

Public records only. Holdings come from the FCC Universal Licensing System. Nothing here is supplied by a carrier.

Rebuilt weekly. The FCC publishes its full licence database once a week. The site is regenerated from each one.

Honest about limits. A licence is permission to transmit, not proof of a tower. We say so on every page.

No affiliation. No carrier pays for placement. The site is funded by display advertising, kept apart from the data.
